School-Based Mental Health Counselor
Provide therapeutic counseling in school-based satellite location in Holland Patent, NY.
Standard full-year work schedule of 37.5-hour work week, M-F, hours may vary based on the assigned school’s individual needs. During school breaks, the clinician will continue to provide services at the school(s), out of a clinic site, and/or in the community depending on needs.
JOB DESCRIPTION: The Neighborhood Center is looking for reliable and conscientious Social Workers and/or Mental Health Counselors to work within a cohesive and supportive multidisciplinary team seeking to provide mental health services to children in the school setting. The School-Based Mental Health Counselor independently performs diagnostic and needs assessments, treatment planning, crisis intervention, and school-based individual and/or group therapy with remote administrative and supervisory support. The School-Based Mental Health Counselor will collaborate with school personnel to assist in identifying the needs of the students and in designing efficient service delivery.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Provides direct school-based therapeutic services to students and their families according to need.
- Conducts strength-based assessments to identify student/family needs.
- Provide clinic and/or community-based individual, family, and/or group therapy during school breaks according to need.
- Provides follow-up before, during, and after services in order to be responsive to the needs of clients/ families as they surface and to help determine satisfaction with services and obtain recommendations for service enhancement.
- Functions as an interdisciplinary team member at all conferences designed to diagnose and treat clients.
- Maintains contact and consults with school personnel and community agencies as the clients’ mental health advocate and as a mental health professional for the treatment team.
- Provides outreach to engage treatment-resistant high-risk students and families.
- Provides input for clinical planning for assigned schools.
- Assists in linking clients to outside agencies and community resources as indicated and appropriate.
- Maintains timely, complete, and accurate record documentation.
- Attends and participates in staff/agency meetings.
- Accepts emergency cases and/or the assignment of other clients by supervisory staff.
- Maintains self in a professional manner at all times, adhering to OMH guidelines, Neighborhood Center policy and procedures, and in keeping with the Agency’s mission statement, as well as the NASW Code of Ethics.
- Performs other duties as requested by Agency Administration.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience working with children and/or adolescents with mental health disorders and their families
- Ability to maintain expectations for timeliness and accuracy in the performance of the job functions.
- Ability to function as an interdisciplinary team member.
- Must reside in Oneida, Herkimer, Otsego, Chenango, Delaware, Schoharie Counties.
- Some flexibility in the work schedule is needed.
- Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW), Mental Health Counseling (MHC), Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT), or Creative Arts Therapy (CAT) with NYS license, or limited permit eligibility.
- For MSW permit holders NYS License must be obtained within six (6) months of employment. All other permit holders must obtain a NYS License within six (6) months of meeting experience requirements.
