Kindred Connections

This program provides services to families living in Schoharie, Otsego, Herkimer or Oneida counties who have adopted or have guardianship of a child. Funded through the NYS Office of Children and Family Services, Our Family will work with your family to find the resources you need.

How We Help

  • A care manager will meet with you in your home - you do not have to come to an office. They will work with your family to identify any needs and link you to resources in the community.
  • Support groups are hosted two times a month; there is an active Facebook Group just for Our Family families.
  • Family fun days are planned at least four times a year at no cost to the families.
  • These services are grant funded so there is no charge to the families. This allows program staff to able to be in the home even though there may be other service providers working with the family.

Family Testimonial

From a client:

"My son and I have been part of The Neighborhood Center’s adoption and guardianship Program for many years. This note is long overdue, but I wanted to take a moment to express our deep gratitude for all that this wonderful program has done for us.

Our journey with The Neighborhood Center began over eleven years ago when I adopted my son. Sally, who recently retired, introduced us to the program, and I am eternally grateful for her guidance. Louis was just five or six years old when we joined, and now he is almost twelve. Throughout this time, our caseworker, Angela, has been nothing short of amazing. Her visits are a joy; we have the best conversations, and she constantly seeks out ways to support our needs.

The blessings we’ve received from The Neighborhood Center are countless. Last year, we received a new stove and most recently, a new vacuum – both were unexpected and incredibly appreciated. We’ve also received gift cards to places like Woods Valley, where Louis had ski lessons, and to local favorites like the Utica Zoo, Stewarts, and Famous Footwear. These opportunities have been more than just outings; they have been experiences that we might not have had otherwise.

The program has also taken us on many adventures, such as trips to Howe Caverns, picnics in the park, a magical train ride, and visits to Glimmerglass. These experiences have allowed my son to meet and make friends with other children, providing him with a sense of community and joy. As a single parent, these events have been a wonderful way for us to enjoy special moments together and with others, making them all the more enriching for my son. Given that my son has a disability, these supports and the sense of inclusion have been crucial to his success and well-being.

What stands out the most is the love and warmth we feel every time we participate in these activities. The caseworkers have made us feel incredibly welcome, and their support and kindness have been invaluable. I am profoundly thankful to them and to The Neighborhood Center for their unwavering generosity.

The remarkable efforts of people like Angela and Sally, has made a significant impact on our lives. We are so appreciative of the friendship, love, and support we have received from The Neighborhood Center. It has truly been a blessing."
