Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

At The Neighborhood Center, we believe that diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are the cornerstones of a healthy and thriving community. Since our founding as the Italian Settlement House in 1905, we have been committed to fostering an environment where everyone—regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity, socioeconomic status, age, religion, or ability—is valued, respected, and supported. Today, we continue that legacy by striving to eliminate social and racial inequities and build a community where all voices are heard, and all individuals have the opportunity to succeed.

Diversity

We recognize the importance of reflecting the rich diversity of the Mohawk Valley in our programs, staff, and leadership. By embracing a wide range of perspectives and experiences, we can better serve the unique needs of every individual and family who turns to us for support. We are committed to hiring, retaining, and promoting a diverse workforce that mirrors the people we serve.

Careers

Equity

Equity is about ensuring fair treatment, access, opportunity, and advancement for all, while striving to identify and eliminate barriers that have prevented the full participation of some groups. At The Neighborhood Center, we focus on understanding the diverse needs of our community and tailoring our services to address disparities that affect marginalized groups. We continuously evaluate our programs to ensure they are accessible, affordable, and effective for all populations.

Inclusion

Creating a welcoming and inclusive environment is central to our mission. We actively work to cultivate spaces where everyone feels a sense of belonging and empowerment, regardless of their background. From our childcare services to our mental health and outreach programs, we ensure that all community members are treated with dignity and respect. We promote an organizational culture where differences are celebrated, and innovation and collaboration are encouraged.

Ongoing Learning and Growth

We recognize that achieving true equity and inclusion is an ongoing journey, and we are committed to continually learning, growing, and improving. Through regular staff training on anti-racism, cultural competency, and bias awareness, we work to ensure that every member of our organization is equipped to contribute to a more equitable community.

We also welcome feedback from our community as we strive to create an inclusive environment that reflects the needs and values of those we serve. We are dedicated to listening, learning, and taking meaningful action to foster a future where everyone can thrive.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion are at the heart of our mission to build a stronger, more resilient community. We invite you to join us in this important work—whether as a volunteer, donor, partner, or community member. Together, we can create a more equitable future for all.
